So I thought hey, why not catch up, have a chat with the band about all things Go.Fly.Win!
What are your musical influences for the new EP?
“Strangely enough, our influences are pretty diverse, with inspiration coming from all corners of the rock world, not just current but the bands we grew up listening to like Taking Back Sunday, Jimmy Eat World, Angels and Airwaves, Biffy Clyro etc. We didn't start out wanting to write an EP that emulated anyone in particular, we just wanted to write songs that we wanted to hear and I think that allowed us to grow and mature a lot during the process. If someone listens to Devices and goes 'that sounds like (insert contemporary band name here)' then that's a compliment we'll gladly accept, but to us, it's the first firework that we couldn't wait to light.”
Why should people listen to Go.Fly.Win.?
“A: I don't think anyone SHOULD listen to us, but if we're lucky enough to get a few minutes of a persons time, to just stop and listen, there might just be a word or a phrase or an idea that could inspire a persons perspective, change their path and that's an idea too big to force upon just anyone, we make music for those that want to listen.”
How did the band name Go. Fly. Win come about?
“Like most bands I'm sure, In the first few weeks myself (Dan) and Aaron went through a whole host of potential names, but none of them had the depth that we wanted. We wanted a name that inspired us but also something that said everything you needed to know, so I came up with Go.Fly.Win. A story within a name, the beginning, middle and end. We later found out that it's also the name of a pretty obscure song once played in an episode of the Power Rangers... but by that point we were too far down the road to turn back, so Go.Fly.Win it was. On the plus side, we're massive geeks so the tenuous link is pretty cool.”
What can fans or new listeners expect from the new EP?
“In a word, Maturity. For current fans, I think there's a real vivid showcase of how much we've grown since our first demos and with this being our first real mark on the world, we made sure we took the time to develop ourselves to a point that we felt we were proud enough for the world to hear this. For new Listeners, there's a diverse range of tracks on Devices, we're not a band that will scream for half an hour and call it an album, every song was written to have more than one meaning, with imagery that you can really wrap your mind around. We all have something or somewhere we aspire to be, Devices is our story, but it's the listener that gives it character.”
As your debut EP ‘D E V I C E S’ comes ever closer to being released, how do you all feel?
“Collectively, we're a classic mix of nervous but excited. We've been sitting on these songs for the better part of a year and to release them is a big deal for us. Like every artist, we want them to be well received, but we know they're strong enough to stand on their own, and whether it's 10 people or 10 million people that like them, we'll be proud either way.”
What is your favourite song from the EP and why?
“This changes individually between us almost on a daily basis, but there's a reason we're releasing O,Icarus first, as it's our mission statement. Not only with the obvious imagery, but from a collectively personal perspective, O,Icarus tells the story of defying the odds, breaking free of normality and becoming what you've always wanted. However physical or emotional your chains are, all it takes is the strength of purpose to feel that freedom.”
What do you want fans to take from ‘D E V I C E S’?
“If you listen to Devices and you take away anything from it, that's more than we ever thought we'd achieve. The Inherent nature of Devices is that anyone of any age, any background or belief can listen and walk away with a strength that they didn't have before. We hope that every person that listens to a song will come along on this journey with us because for us it's not about the number of fans, but the ones that look to the sky.”
What do fans not know about the band, that you think they should know?
“That our hearts are very much on our sleeves.”
Describe the band in three words
”Together we Fly.”
What do you want to achieve as a band?
“I think we all have various individual goals we want to achieve from the band, but collectively, we would like to change as much of the world as humanly possible, however small. There's nothing wrong with dreaming big. If you reach for the stars and fall short, you'll still land in the clouds.”
Are there any plans for a UK tour?
“There's no plan currently for a tour, but if the opportunity presented itself, we wouldn't hesitate.”
What does 2013 hold for the band?
“Once Devices is released mid september, we don't plan on slowing down. We have a music video planned with the amazing Chris stockings for our second single 'Colour Collides' and intend on making Go.Fly.Win a name you'll remember.”
