How are you?
Fletcher Howell: “We're currently on Warped Tour, so we're hot. Great…but hot!”
You have dropped your debut album 'Continuance', can you tell me a little bit about the release?
“We're very excited about it! We released the record on July 22nd and it's been received even better than we hoped. It took a little over a year to get the record out. So it's kind of surreal that it's a real thing now.”
How excited are you to release your debut album?
“On a scale of 1-10, stoked as hell.”
What can fans expect from 'Continuance'?
“Our fans can expect us at our realest. Every song has is a piece of the last 2 years of our lives. Sonically, they can expect variety for sure. We wanted to make a record that covered a lot of ground musically. I feel like we achieved that.”
Who and what has influenced the album both musically and lyrically?
“So many things. Musically, we all listen to just about everything. We all bring our own influence to our part in the music. Lyrically, this album is about overcoming the idea that things should just work out perfectly. The idea that the world can wrong us and that's just how it is. We all get knocked down, but we all have the strength to get back up and become better. We just have to find that strength.”
You have also just dropped your new video for 'My Own Way', why did you decide to release this track as your newest single?
“’My Own Way’ is about looking past our differences and acknowledging that underneath religion, race, sexuality, whatever; we are all just people finding our way in the world.”
You are also on this years Warped Tour, what can fans expect from one of your live shows?
“Our live show definitely consists of a lot of energy. The songs we're playing are very personal to us, so singing these words sort of "reopens the wound" if that makes sense. We leave it all on the stage.”
What do you think sets you apart from other bands in the scene?
“We love a lot of the music and bands in the scene right now. I hope we can take the passion and genuine emotion from our music and deliver it in our live show too.”
Tell me one fact about the band that you don't think your fans will know.
“When we're together, we talk to each other in bad accents about 90% of the time, mostly German. We're dumb.”
What is your favourite track on the album and why?
“That changes a lot. It depends on the day! I think right now, my favourite is ‘Not Afraid’. It's probably the most fun to play live.”
What does the rest of 2016 have in store for the band?
“Touring. Lots of touring.”
Describe the band in three words.
“Bears, beets, Battlestar Galactica”
