How are you?
“Hey, we're great, thanks! Sweating a lot; we're only 7 dates into Warped Tour and it's awesome.”
You have released your new album, can you tell me a little bit about the release?
“Our self-titled debut album came out in May. It's a compilation of songs that we've been working on for a long time. A lot of them were recorded in different sessions at different locations. It's kind of cool for us that it wasn't recorded all at one time because the songs cycle through different events of our lives over the past few years, and tells a full-circle story about who we are.”
What is the album about as a whole?
“There is a lot of angst in this album. As an independent band just starting out, there are a lot of obstacles and the best way to deal with them is to plow through and make some art of it. Some may think that's negative, but for us it's a really positive thing because a lot of the lyrics are about overcoming it. "What You Wanted", for example, is about someone trying to keep you down, or bar you from success. But the lyrics say, "can't break my spirit, no matter what I'm put through" and "push me further under water, but I will not cave."
What was the writing and recording process like?
“For most of these songs, we worked with Pete Stewart. He co-wrote a couple of the songs with Corrin and produced most of the tracks. He's incredible to work with, and a well-rounded musician as well. We decided to work with him because he's from that Seattle grunge scene we love so much. He has won a couple Grammys for his work with Macklemore and DC Talk (very different sides of the industry) and was really on board with us not wanting to edit a lot or use AutoTune. We wanted a really organic rock sound, and he was the perfect teammate to get it done in a way we loved.”
Do you have a favourite track on the record, if so what song and why?
“Our favourite is probably "What You Wanted". It was the last one we recorded, and the energy we get playing it live is great. It seems to be the fan fav too.”
What can fans expect from your new music?
“We're trying to bring rock in its simplest and truest form. Just vocals, guitars, bass, and drums with strong song writing. In our minds, that's all you need to make good music.”
What and who has influenced your sound and style on the new record?
“We pull from a lot of influences. The 90s grunge era is really the epitome of raw rock instrumentation for us, so we love bands like Nirvana and Sublime. More recent bands we listen to are Foo Fighters, Jimmy Eat World, and Paramore. Rocking guitars and good vocals are what we usually end up turning into.”
Tell me one fact about the band that you don't think your fans will know.
“Some fans don't know we're in the Army, active-duty, and that (right now) this band is our full-time gig. We still maintain Soldier readiness and all that, but we tour 300 days a year playing music. It's a pretty sweet deal.”
Describe the band in three words.
“Organic power trio.”
You are on Warped Tour this year, what are you most looking forward to?
“Meeting new fans. We're just starting out, and it's exciting to meet people who are hearing our music for the first time. We're trying to remember as many faces as we can, because these are our first fans. These are the people we need to remember when we tour back through, because they're the reason we have a job!”
What can fans expect from one of your live shows?
“Lots of energy. We love getting everybody into it and having a good time. We're also kind of quirky, and we try to let out our personality as much as possible during the set. It's okay not to be stereotypical "cool".”
What are you most excited for this year?
“This tour is probably our most exciting venture as of now. We have fall and winter tour plans as well, but then we'll probably be heading back into the studio to make the next album. Most of our time is spent touring, touring, touring, which is pretty typical of a new band.”
Where can fans find out more about you?
“We're EVERYWHERE online with the username @DashTenMusic - fans can also find out more at www.dashtenmusic.com. We spend most of our time on Twitter, and love chatting with fans whenever we have a down minute, so that's probably the best place to reach us. People can also message us on Facebook and Instagram. Tumblr and YouTube are also great places to reach us. The entire debut album can be streamed for free on Soundcloud, but it's also on Spotify and all the standard online music platforms. We'd love to hear what everyone thinks of it!”
