How are you?
“I'm feeling pretty good considering I had a fever a day ago. It feels good to up and about.”
You have released your new record "Believe", can you tell me a little bit about the release?
“It is our 2nd album all self-recorded, produced and released. It was half mixed by Joey Sturgis and half mixed by Josh Buckner and Nick Matzkows. It's a current compilation of our handwork, hopes, dreams, struggles and sorrows.”
What was the recording and writing process like for the record?
“We spent most of it writing ideas that we liked and wrote lyrics based off the vibe of the song and current events and emotions in our lives. We mainly recorded demos of all the songs but once we knew we were gonna be on the drop the gloves tour we just tracked the last few ideas we thought were the best and just kept rolling with it. There's always a rush for time when you have a deadline and production of the physicals and the mixes need to be back by a certain time so you have CDs in hand and digital tracks online before your release. So things like tracking and editing everything all by yourself can be an entirely new type of headache but in the end the results of a completed product in time are a well-deserved reward.”
Do you have a favourite song from the record? If, so what song and why?
“It's always been hard to choose. We spent a lot of time on each song and really didn't have to rush the writing that much. I enjoy songs like ‘Primrose Path’ and ‘Hell is Empty’ and ‘All the Devils’ are Here simply because they are a bit different from what you would typically hear now a days. There are also songs like ‘The Hunter’ and ‘The Lion and Slave’ that just have a completely different vibe from the record. I love that it fits an array of flavours for tastes of people who enjoy certain things at certain times or in certain situations. It just depends on how you feel at the moment.”
What and who has influenced your sound and style on the new record?
“It is hard to say really. We knew we were going for a much heavier sound than the first album but from there we don't really pinpoint what makes our style or sound. We kind of just vibe out on what were feeling during the time we're writing the songs and don't think about what it should sound like.”
What can fans expect from your new release, if they haven't listened to it already?
“They should expect an eclectic variety of jams with savoury licks, fat beats, ear candy galore and a hint of your grandma knitted you a sweater and is yelling at you for not wearing it to your families' holiday dinner.”
You're currently out on a headline tour. What can fans expect from one of your shows?
“You can expect that we will stop at nothing to get to the show and play it. even if we have to sacrifice one of our members for "the greater good.”
Tell me one fact about the band that you don't think your fans will know.
“In the wild, A War Within will fluff its mane in a rhythmic continuous motion in efforts to communicate with others of its species.”
Describe the band in three words.
“Free Taco Bell (please)”
What are you most excited for this year?
“Christmas at grandmas, working on our 3rd album and all the nerd movies coming out this summer.”
